Dreamcatchers filter dreams. According to Ojibwe tradition, they let positive dreams pass through the web and gently slide down the feathers to the sleeper below. Negative dreams, on the other hand, are caught in the web and disappear with the morning sunlight.

  • The circular hoop represents the circle of life and the path of the sun and moon across the sky. The sinew web mimics a spider’s web and symbolizes protection and connection. Feathers represent breath or air, which is essential for life.

Dreamcatchers originated with the Ojibwe people but were adopted by other Native American tribes over time, especially during the Pan-Indian Movement in the 1960s and 70s. As a result, dreamcatchers are now broadly recognized across Indigenous cultures, although their meanings and designs can vary.
